Report Finds TCUs Drive $3.8 Billion into Local Economies

   ♦   September 11, 2025

The American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) released the report, “Building Local Economies of Scale: Impact of Tribal Colleges and Universities in Rural America,” a large-scale economic impact study conducted in partnership with Lightcast. According to the report, tribal colleges and universities (TCUs) contribute $3.8 billion to the national economy and support more than 40,700 jobs across the United States in several key infrastructure sectors such as healthcare, government, retail, and professional services. The report analyzes FY 2022–2023 data from all 35 TCUs across the nation.
